Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree forum also provided a valuable forum to help us bounce questions off fellow travellers where to go.. and where to avoid.  We’d recommend using Lonely Planet as a basic guide…. and then looking slightly of the beaten track for your real cultural experiences!

silk roadThe Silk Route from Iran to Pakistan was the most difficult part of the trip from a security point of view. We didn’t end up travelling through Afghanistan and Pakistan due to budget constraints., . However, Pat and Murray  from Silk Road Adventures were very helpful and a vital link in advising on the unknown state of security in each country, process in gaining visas, and procedures at borders. They were able to customise an itinerary especially for us, taking into account the ‘basic’ way we wanted to travel through these countries.
